One-piece jumpsuit or overall type clothes are helpful for younger children in this age group especially if they tend to want to “play” with the ostomy pouch. Tucking the pouch into undergarments, shorts, pants. Using an ostomy belt that matches the pouch can be helpful in adding support or help prevent the child from inadvertently removing the pouch.
Pouch Covers:
These products are helpful when your child is doing running, jumping or other active sports activities. The products turns liquid stool output into a gel to prevent “sloshing” or “backflow” of ileostomy fluid.
If your child is sensitive to smells or has concerns for others noticing odor, there are deodorizing products from all the major ostomy companies. In addition, it may be helpful to supply daycare/preschool staff with a small bottle of deodorizing spray to use when emptying the pouch. Keep in mind that the stool output odor is usually similar to usual stool odor when children stool in a diaper or the toilet.
