Socialization & youth sports

There are no restrictions on activities, but it is helpful to empty the pouch before naps and active activities to help prevent accidental leaks.

Vacation & Travel

Making sure to pack appropriate supplies when vacationing. It is always helpful to have extra appliances and extra sets of clothing on hand—pack these in carry luggage when taking a flight, along with any medicines your child may be taking.

Know where the nearest hospital is to your destination in case of an emergency.

Clothing, Accessories, & Pouch Covers

One-piece jumpsuit or overall type clothes are helpful for younger children in this age group especially if they tend to want to “play” with the ostomy pouch. Tuck the pouch into undergarments, shorts, pants can also help. Using an ostomy belt that matches the pouch can be helpful in adding support or help prevent the child from inadvertently removing the pouch.

If your child is sensitive to smells or has concerns for others noticing odors, there are deodorizing products from all the major ostomy companies. In addition, it may be helpful to supply the daycare / preschool staff with a small bottle of deodorizing spray to use when emptying the pouch. Keep in mind that the ostomy output odor is usually similar to stool odor.

Parent Stories

I sing during bag changes; this always makes him freeze and focus on my voice and lips. Once I’m done, we play for a minute before getting him dressed!

At first whenever I went swimming in the river, my bag would pop off and make a big mess. But then I figured out it was from being full of air, and air floats! Now I am careful to keep all the air out when I swim and it hasn’t been a problem.
